HISTORY

The Faculty of Education of Yogyakarta State University (FIP UNY) was originally the Pedagogy Division of the Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy, and Philosophy (FSPF) at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta. Gadjah Mada University (Universitit Negeri Gadjah Mada) itself was officially established on December 19, 1949, through Government Regulation No. 23 of 1949, a provisional regulation concerning the merger of several higher education institutions into a single university.

The exact date and legal basis for when the “Pedagogy Division” became part of the Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy and Philosophy (FSPF) UGM remains unclear. Legally, the existence of this Pedagogy Division was confirmed through Government Regulation No. 37 of 1950, dated August 14, 1950.

Drawing an analogy to Gatotkaca, who at birth was called Jabang Tetuka, the Senate of the Faculty of Education agreed to designate the “birth date” of the UNY Faculty of Education (“Gatotkaca”) from its earliest form as “Jabang Tetuka” (the Pedagogy Division), rather than from when it was formally named “Gatotkaca” (the Faculty of Education or the Pedagogy Faculty of UGM). Thus, it was agreed that August 14, 1950 (the de jure establishment of the Pedagogy Division of FSPF UGM) is the official birth date of the Faculty of Education UNY. This agreement was officiated through a Decree of the Dean of FIP UNY on December 23, 2010.

This agreement was based on historical findings by the Historical Data Investigation Team for the Birth of the Faculty of Education UNY, chaired by Drs. Dwi Siswoyo, M.Hum., with members Drs. Sutiman, M.Pd., and Drs. Waluyo Adi, M.Pd., under the supervision of Drs. Tatang M. Amirin, M.Si.

In the 1951/1952 Annual Report of Universitit Negeri Gadjah Mada, page 17, it is stated that the academic activities of the Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy and Philosophy began on January 23, 1951. Therefore, due to the national situation at the time, classes did not begin immediately even though the Pedagogy Division and the FSPF UGM had been legally established.

The same report also notes that beginning March 1, 1952, the Physical Education Academy was integrated into the Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy and Philosophy as a division known as the “Physical Education Baccalaureate Program.”

Furthermore, based on a decree from the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture dated May 28, 1953, the Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy and Philosophy UGM received an additional unit: the Center for Education and Instructional Planning.

In the 1953/1954 Annual Report of Universitit Negeri Gadjah Mada, page 9, dated September 19, 1954, it is stated that the Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy and Philosophy consisted of departments of Eastern Literature, Western Literature, History, Geography, Physical Education, and Pedagogy.

Beginning September 15, 1955, through Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture No. 53759/Kab on the Regulation to Complete the Organizational Structure of Gadjah Mada University, the faculty was reorganized into three separate faculties:

  1. The Faculty of Literature
  2. The Faculty of Philosophy
  3. The Faculty of Education (sometimes referred to as the Pedagogy Faculty)

Thus, the development of today’s Faculty of Education UNY from the Pedagogy Division of FSPF UGM officially dates to September 15, 1955, not September 19, 1955, as commonly celebrated.

On September 19, 1955, through a Decree dated September 16, 1955, No. 33895/CIII, the deans of various faculties within UGM were appointed. Therefore, the date long commemorated as the anniversary of the Faculty of Education UNY is actually the date of the appointment of faculty deans. This decree was announced by UGM Rector Prof. Dr. Sardjito during an Open Senate Meeting on September 19, 1955.

Based on this decree, it is known that the Dean of the Pedagogy Faculty was Prof. Drs. A. Sigit.

Subsequently, through Presidential Decree No. 1/1963 and Joint Instructions Nos. 32 and 34 of 1964, FIP UGM, FKIP UGM, and the Teacher Education Institute (IPG) Surakarta were unified into the Yogyakarta Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP Yogyakarta). The Psychology Department of FIP UGM separated and became an independent faculty within UGM. IKIP Yogyakarta was inaugurated on May 21, 1964.
